Bruant jaune
Meet the Yellowhammer, a familiar and charming inhabitant of the Val d'Hérens landscape, easily spotted by its bright plumage and distinct song.
Latin Name : Emberiza
Habitat : The Yellowhammer thrives in the transition zone between forests and open areas : forest edges, clearings, young plantations, orchards, vineyards and most importantly, hedgerows. Primarily residing in the plains or on hillsides, the birds finds suitable habitats on the dry slopes of the Val d'Hérens.
Behaviour : Often perched atop a tall bush, the Yellowhammer delivers its characteristic, monotonous song : "zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zi-zuuuh". When sensing danger, it nervously flicks its tail before taking flight. It is a partial migrant.
Reproduction : it nests most often in the dense, low branches of a bush, or directly on the ground. It typically has two broods per year.
Diet : Primarily granivorous (seed-eater) in winter. For the rest of the year, it consumes small insects found on the ground.
